Abstract
Costs analysis and evaluation of irrigation water on RDI and PRD in vineyards in semi-arid zones. A cost–benefit analysis was performed in a vineyard (cv. Monastrell) to determine the profitability of this crop in conditions of Regulated Deficit Irrigation (RDI) and Partial Root –Zone Drying (PRD) compared with vines grown in a full irrigation regime in the edapho–climatic conditions of SE Spain. Five irrigation treatments were applied for three years: one Control and two different regulated deficit irrigation treatments under conventional drip irrigation (RDI–1 and 2) and under PRD (PRD–1 y 2). RDI and PRD only differed in the irrigation method, because the deficit irrigation strategy applied was exactly the same, applying also the same annual water amount.
Annual production costs per hectare were reduced between 11% and 23% in the deficit treatments compared with Control, but this is the most profitable treatment in all economic indicators followed distantly by the RDI–1. In addition, the indices show that there is not a substantial improvement of PRD compared to conventional RDI, even in the current situation, the PRD provides less economic benefits that the RDI.
Key words: Economics, Winegrapes, Water Use Efficiency (WUE).
