Abstract
The incidence of the new self-compatible varieties in almond growing in Spain. Spain, second world’s almond producer, is the most active country in almond breeding. The data on the almond plant production by the Spanish nurseries evidences the introduction of these new varieties in the new orchards. The last 14 years shows that the varieties released by the CITA of Aragón represent 40.73% of the 18 million plants produced, with an unquestionable predominance of ‘Guara’. It is also significant the incidence of the varieties released by the IRTA, and less that of the varieties from the CEBAS-CSIC of Murcia. The traditional Spanish varieties still represent approximately a quarter of the production. The French varieties are still important, but less the Italian. The Californian varieties are only testimonial. The Spanish almond production is based every time more on varieties released by breeding programs. The self-compatible varieties represent 47.52% of the total.
Key words: Almond, Prunus amygdalus, New varieties, Nurseries, Breeding, Self-Compatibility.
